Executive Summary

It is recommended that the City Council adopt the attached resolution approving the updated part-time classification and compensation schedule, including the addition of three new part-time classifications: City Clerk Specialist, Sr. Marketing and Communications Specialist, and Jr. Part-Time IT Technician.

Discussion

The City of San Marcos periodically reviews its classification and compensation schedules to ensure they accurately reflect the roles and responsibilities of positions within the organization and to support the City's goals of efficiency, service, and strategic workforce planning.

The City Clerk’s administrative team performs specialized and essential functions that require distinct recognition. The new classification title of City Clerk Specialist is being proposed to acknowledge the specialized work being completed and to provide appropriate compensation for these responsibilities.

Recognizing the increased responsibilities of communications in our City operations, the new classification title of Sr. Marketing and Communications Specialist is being proposed to create a career pathway for succession planning and distinction between the duties performed within these classifications.

As part of our succession planning efforts and to create a career pathway for non-paid interns, the new classification title of Jr. Part-Time IT Technician is being introduced. This position will offer interns the opportunity to gain practical experience and potentially move into more advanced roles within the IT department.

Environmental Review

Not applicable.

Fiscal Impact

The fiscal impact of these changes has been accounted for within the current budget allocations, as they were included in the departmental requests for the Part-Time budgets for FY25.
