Introduction

In 2014, the City Council voted to formally establish a youth liaison program following a one year pilot program.  The youth liaison program was formed to give students not selected for the Youth Commission an opportunity to learn about city government, earn community service hours, and get formal recognition for volunteering to serve in the program.  Students participating in the program serve as youth liaisons to City boards and commissions, but are not members.  Instead, the youth liaisons observe meetings and prepare brief reports summarizing what they heard and learned.

Discussion

Following the City Council’s May 23, 2017 meeting, staff contacted each of the students not selected for appointment to the Youth Commission and offered them the opportunity to participate in the youth liaison program.  Students interested in participating in the program were asked to indicate the board or commission to which they are interested in serving as a liaison.  Two students responded to staff indicating they were interested in serving as a youth liaison.  They are:

Taylor Quach (Community Services Commission)

Vikram Venkatesh (Planning Commission)

While their appointments are being submitted to the Council for approval, both candidates were informed that it was not necessary for them to be present at the Council meeting to be appointed.

Following City Council appointment of the youth liaisons, the staff liaison to the Community Services Commission and the Planning Commission will follow up with the students to provide an orientation and information about meeting agendas.

Fiscal Impact

There is no fiscal impact.
